Event Recap - Book Club Discussion

January 18, 2019

We met on Tuesday, December 4th over snacks and wine, to discuss Sara Farizan’s debut novel If You Could Be Mine (2013). Farizan is Iranian American young adult literature writer, and this book explored the main character Sahar’s journey through finding oneself in the complex landscape of same sex love in present-day Iran. It was a lively discussion covering topics cultural identity of youth, laws affecting LGBTQ communities and how they impact or transgress social mores. It was a great opportunity to not only discuss current events but also to have new voices through collaboration with the LGBTQ Affinity Group. If you are interested in joining our book club, please email Emily at emily.chew@yale.edu. We are currently taking book suggestions for the next book club discussion, which will meet in March.
