Yale supports Philippines relief efforts

November 13, 2013

Members of the campus community and beyond who want to help victims of the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda — or who want to contact loved ones there — can find resources to do so at the Yale Relief for the Philippines website.

“The need right now is for money to provide medical care, emergency shelter, and food to assist the estimated 10 million people affected by the strongest typhoon ever to make landfall in recoded history,” wrote Kimberly Goff-Crews, Yale secretary and vice president for student life, in an email to faculty, staff, and students.

“Our immediate university-wide plans are focusing on fund-raising for this urgent relief effort. Contributions will go to the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, and Mercy Corps,” she added. “These organizations already have a presence in the Philippines and have begun the work of delivering humanitarian aid, services, and supplies.”

At the Yale Relief for the Philippines website, visitors can make a donation via credit card. The site also includes information about resources for those trying to contact loved ones in the area.

Individuals can also make donations through the Yale Relief Fund by sending a check made out to one of the above organizations to Yale Treasury, 2 Whitney Ave., first floor. Donors should write “Philippines Relief” in the memo line.

Campus groups are also holding fundraising efforts. Kasama, the Filipino club of Yale, will present “Bagong Araw,” a benefit concert, on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Sheffield Sterling Strathcona auditorium, Rm. 114, 1 Prospect St. The concert will include performances by various Yale student groups, followed by a candlelight vigil. Donations for this event will benefit AmeriCares to support the purchase of medical supplies. A later event will be held after the Thanksgiving break to support the re-building efforts. The proceeds will go to Gawad Kalinga, a Filipino-based charity. Specific information will be posted on http://relief.yale.edu and http://www.crowdrise.com/yalekasamahaiyandonate.

In addition, the Asian Network at Yale (AN@Y) will host a Fall Reception Fundraiser for Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts. The reception will be held at Bentara Restaurant, located at 76 Orange St., on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 4:30 p.m. to  6:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted, and a presentation will be given on local community efforts to further assist with Typhoon relief. Register for the AN@Y Fall Reception Fundraiser.

“The effects of this crisis will be felt for a very long time,” noted Goff-Crews. “Our focus now is on immediate relief, but we know that a number of schools and campus groups are considering what they can do longer term. As more information becomes available, we will post it at http://relief.yale.edu.”
