Approximately 30 people attended our inaugural mahjong night, a joint event with Yale LGBTQ Affinity Group held on April 16, 2019. It was themed “Mahjong and Mai Fun” as a nod to the novel by Kevin Kwan and major motion picture “Crazy Rich Asians” which takes place primarily in Singapore. This popular stir fry noodle dish and strategy game were enjoyed by first timers as well as seasoned players. Emily Chew and Jean Chang delved into the pivotal mahjong scene in the movie, a game between Rachel (played by Constance Wu) and her possible future mother-in-law Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). It was a lively discussion of east versus west, cinematic cultural lens, and the symbolism of mahjong. Stay tuned for the next round of mahjong!
